Gay eBay: porn, casual sex and filthy undies

By Jeremy Wilson

Warning: This article contains sexually explicit material that may be NSFW.

Online marketplace eBay is facilitating the creation and sale of bespoke pornography and even helping to organise real-world hook-ups where money changes hands, according to the results of a Kernel investigation.

The open, non-age verified gay porn product category on eBay is restricted to stickers that advertise a love of the genre and documentaries about porn stars. It does not carry any pornography. But surfers who know the lingo can access full-frontal male nudity on demand by browsing the underwear section of the site or by knowing a few key phrases.

There is also evidence that eBay is facilitating real-world casual sex hook-ups, based on the contents of some feedback comments and the ready exchange of email addresses and photographs outside eBay’s normal messaging system.

Item listings such as this single condom, described as the seller’s “last one with no reason to use!!! ;-)”, with an invitation to contact “scally-up-4it@*******.uk”, are covers for real-world gay hook-ups, The Kernel has discovered.

There is no suggestion that professional escorts are marketing themselves this way, but given that money is changing hands and considering “cash on delivery” comments left by purchasers, it is possible that eBay is facilitating a informal version of gay prostitution.

In the course of negotiating a used underwear purchase, a Kernel reporter even discussed meeting up for casual sex with multiple partners with one eBay seller.

By browsing the men’s underwear section of eBay or by entering a few specific search terms, shoppers are presented with grainy iPhone snaps of men who cannot be described as typical underwear models, offering used underwear and, often, explicit pictures of themselves to buyers.

These listings are open and available for anyone to access.

The listing names for these grubby images include terms such as “scally lad” and “gay INT”, giving a hint as to their true function, which is as gateways to an underground bespoke porn marketplace operating right under eBay’s nose with no age restrictions or adult content warnings.

A search for “used” or “worn” in the underwear section of eBay yields a recommendation from eBay’s auto-complete system that suggests you append “scally”, “chav” and “scally lads”.

On closer inspection these listings contain odd caveats to skirt around eBay’s “no used underwear” policy.

Take, for instance, “SCALLY LAD STYLE TIGHT FIT BLACK CALVINS – MEDIUM – GAY INT” offered for sale by sportysporty69, who has fourteen similar items for sale.

IN ORDER TO COMPLY WITH EBAY, BUYER WILL GET THEIR OWN BRAND NEW PAIR. I ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS AND REQUESTS – ASK AWAY. EBAY – THE PAIR USED FOR FOR MODELLING ONLY – BUYER GETS OWN NEW PAIR

These oddly worded phrases are common throughout all “scally boy” related items – for instance, the item “Scally Lads White Playboy Boxer Shorts – Gay Scally Interest” offered for sale by paulcx5200:

Pair in photo are Brand New but have identicle ones as were part of a Twin Set for modelling purposes if required. MY IDENTICLE ONES HAVE BEEN FOR PLAYING FOOTIE AND HANGING WITH MATES, ALSO LAYING AROUND THE HOUSE!

These listings come with vague hints that something other than a clean pair of underwear might be available from the sellers.

ANY QUESTIONS OR REQUESTS, JUST ASK ;-) ALL QUESTIONS ANSWERED. EXTRA PICTURES AVAILABLE TO SERIOUS BIDDERS

At the end of the listing the seller protests too much.

EBAY – These are not erotic or adult in any way and no different to similar listing so please do not remove. They are NEW and will arrive clean to the winning bidder in order to comply with all regulations.

Similarly, a current item, “Mens Lads Boxers – Scally Interest New” offered by crighton1969, has this succinct description.

Ebay – the listing has no intention to portray any sexual content.

Searching for “Scally Lads” in men’s clothing also brings up non-underwear listings, but they still contain the same bizarre code language. For instance, this posting from midzboiz2010 offers an extremely worn pair of Nike Airs:

“Worn as in the pictures but still have life in them & I am more than happy to use them still to this day Looking for a new home where they will get looked after suit a collector/worshiper who is into collecting trainers Look great with joggers & footie sox or with jeans…. Also been on a few holidays so look good with shorts also!

Questions about this item please send me a message or mail me – midzboiz@live.co.uk”

The Kernel emailed midzboiz2010 and a few other sellers, to see what exactly they are offering.

The first to reply was from paulcx5200, purveyor of the “Scally Lads White Playboy Boxer Shorts”.

“Hi thanks for looking at my items the listing is for a brand new pair of white boxers… I have identical pairs of most boxers I sell so know how they feel on and some people that bid want to see how they look on etc”

We asked midzboiz2010, the seller of “Scally Lads Nike TN Air UK 10″, whether he regularly supplied to “worshippers” and this was his response.

“Hey Buddy, Cheers for the mail, one horny lad who gets horny getting others horny… Sort out anything any questions just ask, what you looking for? Cheers Midz”

Finally we contacted crighton1969, who was offering “Any further information/photos”, to people interested in his “Mens Lads Boxers”. This was the response we received.

On the eBay user page belonging to “Midz” a profile photo makes it clear that this is not an ordinary eBay merchant. Yet the site allows such users to carry on selling and sharing bespoke pornography apparently unimpeded.

“Amazing ebayer! Willing to go that extra mile to get it just how you like,” writes one commenter.

“Great item, came quickly,” says another, with tongue presumably planted in cheek.

A third comment reads: “A very outgoing jock 2 do scally business with / loves 2 satisfy / just ask”.

The Kernel has also seen a pair of tracksuit bottoms for sale, described as marked with “stains” that would not “cum” out.

eBay told The Kernel: “eBay does not allow the sale of used underwear or the use of the site for sale of sexual items of this nature. These listings will be removed and we will take steps to ensure future listings are not permitted, including ensuring these items are blocked from searches.”

The company later added: “The listings in your article have been removed. We are taking urgent action to remove all other listings of concern.”
