In our first two trips to South By Southwest Interactive, the Daily Dot put out a special print edition. As the paper of record for the Web, it was a fitting (if maddening to produce) nod to our traditional journalism principles and a way to showcase some of our best work on the breakout themes and speakers at the center of the world’s biggest annual tech conference. In 2012, we even hired old-fashioned newsies to hand out copies on the street.
We’re picking back up that idea this year at the Kernel. While there are literally hundreds of panels at SXSW, we’ve focused here on what we feel are the year’s most-pressing and important trends, from Google X’s mad-science “moonshots” and millennial politics to the future of YouTube and the 3D tech revolutionizing the healthcare industry. Each feature contains info for the corresponding SXSW panel, but even if you’re not attending, these reports should give you a sense not only for where the tech industry is at right now—but where it’s headed. You’ll also find an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the documentary Deep Web, which is premiering at SXSW, with producer Alex Winter.
As an Austin-based company, the Daily Dot has a real fondness for SXSW and an appreciation of its storied history. It’s where our CEO/Editor-in-Chief Nicholas White first met Daily Dot cofounder Nova Spivek and our CTO Zach Richardson, and there’s not a year that goes by where we don’t come away inspired by the flurry of new ideas presented and the sheer, manic energy that consumes the city every March.
This year we’ll be all over the map during SXSW, providing on-the-ground coverage and live reports produced in collaboration with HLN. We’re cosponsoring Umbel’s SXSW kick-off party Friday night at ACL Live at the Moody Theater. You can RSVP here. It’s being headlined by Spoon, which is pretty much the best intro to Austin possible. We’ll also have a booth Friday through Sunday at the SXSW Gaming Expo, where we’ll host a live edition of our esports Twitch show, The Loadout.
Here’s a rundown of where else you’ll find us next week.
- EIC Nicholas White is an MC for SXSW Accelerator Saturday at 12:30pm.
- Reporter Rae Votta moderates a panel on YouTube’s community and culture on Sunday at 12:30pm.
- Community manager Logan Youree hosts the official Reddit Meetup on Sunday at JW Marriot.
- I’m taking part in a SXSW Daily Wrap session Monday at 12:30pm.
- Director of Video Josh Rubin and Daily Dot Media editor Tom Cheredar host a panel on fostering tech scenes outside of Silicon Valley Tuesday at 3:30pm.
And for those looking for some tips for SXSW Music, don’t worry: We’ll be back next week—with a BBQ hangover.
