E is for Ecce Homo

By James Cook on October 5th, 2013

Cecilia Jiménez had good intentions. She wanted to restore the painting named Ecce Homo to its original state. So she set to work, “restoring” the damaged fresco. Unfortunately, she totally ruined the painting, making it look like a bearded monkey.

Ecce Homo became a viral sensation, with comparison images such as the one above making people around the world double over in laughter.

For Jiménez, the global press attention made her a local celebrity. Unfortunately, the elderly woman began suffering from anxiety attacks as the world mocked her botched restoration.

Eventually, however, the “restored” fresco would go on to bring visitors flocking to the small church that housed the piece. An entrance fee was introduced, and the failed restoration eventually raised over €50,000 for charity.
